Commemorating the 190th Birthday of George Edward Pickett
The Pickett Society's River Tour - June 7th, 2015
On June 7th, The Pickett Society will sponsor a boat tour of
militarily historic areas of the James River to celebrate January 16, 1825,
the date of Maj. Gen. George E. Pickett's birth.
The above map shows the course of our tour between Jordan Point and Cox's Landing and areas of engagement during the War Between the States. We will board the tour boat between 9:45 and 10:00 a.m. at Jordan Point Marina. In order to facilitate parking at the marina, we will carpool by leaving as many vehicles as possible at Dockside Restaurant, 700 Jordan Point Road, which is approximately ½ mile south of the marina. Our skipper will be Capt. Mike Ostrander who is an established river guide. Capt. Mike was trained by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries as an Angling Instructor and he directs Discover the James and James River Fishing School. Scott Williams will provide the historical aspect of the tour. He was the mapmaker and contributing author for the Bermuda Hundred Campaign Tour Guide and serves as Chairman of the Military History Committee for the Chesterfield Historical Society. Mike and Scott have produced a pictorial Tour Book. The 8 ½" by 11" pages are bound and covered with acrylic. The photographs in the book are all circa Civil War. It is a rare collection and will be available for sale to our tour members. The river tour will be about 3 hours long, ending at Jordan Point Marina. We will gather for lunch at Dockside Restaurant at approximately 1:30 p.m.
