GETTYSBURG AND GODS AND GENERALS
Longstreet's Restaurant ~ Petersburg, Virginia
August 24, 2002
This view of a portion of Pat's audience contains some of the exposed masonry and original steps in the 200 plus year old building where Longstreet's is located.
On August 24, Pickett Society members and friends gathered at Longstreet's Restaurant in Petersburg, Virginia, to hear actor and historian Patrick Falci discuss the making of the films Gettysburg and Gods and Generals. Falci, who portrayed Lieutenant General Ambrose Powell Hill in "Gettysburg," served as a technical advisor during the filming of Gods and Generals, which is scheduled for nationwide theatrical release in January.
Longstreet's, which was named for the famous Confederate general, is located in a 200-year-old building in Old Towne Petersburg. The large structure was originally erected to house a mercantile enterprise and has recently undergone changes that allow views of the original masonry. Attendees enjoyed a delicious buffet luncheon of sandwiches, wraps, salads, and desserts as well as Falci's insights into the recent making of what Dr. James I. (Bud) Robertson has called "the best Civil War movie I've ever seen."
After Pat's presentation, he gave out candy cigars, lemons, and fish to admirers of Generals Longstreet, Jackson, and Pickett, respectively, before he answered questions.
Pat's version of Ted Turner's version of Colonel Patton rallying his troops on the set of Gettysburg. When the original idea to make a movie about the Gettysburg campaign was considered, the preferred actor for the role of Robert E. Lee was Charlton Heston; the choice for the role of James Longstreet was Marlon Brando.
Dan Paterson, Chris Takacs (owner), Pat Falci, Joan Falci, and Dwight Wood. Front and center is the amazing rollerskating waitress, Heather Matthas, who demonstrated her grace and athletic ability in the public area of the restaurant during our program.
